I mean most people and critics really love it, although a month later the audience seems to be *crickets chirping* going by gaming forums like era where the OT is completely dead.
I'll admit it may just be a subjective thing that this is a good game but it just doesn't click with my personal tastes.

But...I do think the combination of "HEY LOOK AT THIS TOTALLY FREE GAME YOU CAN PLAY RIGHT NOW" and "SOME OF THE BEST GRAPHICS YOU'VE EVER SEEN" gave it a lot more enthusiasm than it would have gotten otherwise. If it wasn't on Game Pass for free, I think it'd still be popular, but not anywhere near the hype.

I still think Edge totally missed the mark with their 10/10 for Immortality, but their 7/10 review for Hi Fi Rush seems on point to me, if not a little high.

I’ve finally started wrapping up some of the storylines in Octopath Traveler 2. I did Castti and Throne’s final chapters and I’m doing Temenos now. Castti’s story ended the way it seemed like it was going to end based on the previous chapters, but Throne’s story got bonkers at end lmao.

I doubt I'll finish it before it leave Gamepass, but Paradise Killer has hooked me these past few days. Game timer says I've played 3 hours, but it felt longer. Oh well. Its not the type of game I'd normally play and I'm not really sure what's going on, but the presentation and great soundtrack go a long way. The original Phoenix Wright game hooked me pretty much the same way.
I might actually beat it tonight. I've been almost everywhere on the island and have a lot of money, so now I can abuse fast travel to solve this case. :tophat

Still chugging along on various games I've been playing:

Disco Elysium - I started this about 2 weeks ago and I think I'm nearing the end. Very fun game (though Switch performance and crashes is straight up slav-jank), and probably the closest a wrpg ever got to the "emulate a D&D campaign" conceit that was the original holy grail for the genre in its early days. Helping a group of ravers start a club in an abandoned church was obviously my favorite quest (and it's funny how there's an allusion to Armin Van Buuren in the game). I've been playing the character as a social democrat, pro union, feminist, apologist, disco cop. Think I'm nearing the end as I've finished almost all of my quests and am getting ready to confront

.

Crash 4 - STILL playing this but the end is in sight. Up to the final boss, beat all the levels, beat all the inverted levels, got all the hidden gems (not the "break all boxes" gems, fuck that), got all the colored gems. Got all but the final Flashback Tape, and it doesn't -seem- as hard as I initially thought. So I'm gonna try to do that on Fri.

It Takes Two - Haven't played too much since my fiancee has been busy with school. We're up to the final stage now, though last night we went back to do a trophy/minigame cleanup. Cool Zelda reference in one of the trophies. Will probably beat this tonight.

After I beat the 3 above I'll be going hard on Azure.

Borderlands 3 on PS5. It’s more Borderlands, which is fine for me since it’s been a few years since I last played the pre-sequel. I don’t have the volume on as I listen to other music so I can avoid the cringy “humor.”

Finished up Metro Exodus.  I apparently got the bad ending.  Not sure where there was any indication of a turning point or anything, since 95% of cut scenes had zero interactivity with them and there was nothing I could recall about having a choice. If there’s a choice, it’s buried somewhere.   It was definitely the weakest of the trilogy, especially on the set pieces.   Only thing it had going for it is the suped up graphics/sound and the gunplay felt really solid, but the open hubbish design felt detached from the atmosphere from the prior 2 and provided a bit too much in terms of exploration and loot.. if you explore enough, you have more than enough ammo and supplies for meds.. That being said, harder mode might have proven more fun a survival challenge.  I did like that they took a big step back from the supernatural stuff of Last Light though.  But over all 3 Metro’s, 2033 still resonated the most, as janky as it was.

Trying now to decide between Horizon 2 (40% through), AC Valhalla (40% though), Mass Effect Trilogy (25% through ME2) and Sekiro (60% through) to continue tonight to tie me over until RE4 next Friday.   Any suggestions?  :)

Was literally about to snag Signalis last night, but my cheapness held me back.  Will wait for a sale or freebie.

Yeah, I'm probably going to bail on Hi Fi Rush.  As a character action fan, I think this game fucking sucks. The combat is so unsatisfying, the level design is boring and stages go on way too long and I've started skipping every cutscene because I can't stand the dialogue/writing.

I really hate the shield bullshit. The combat reminds me of the bad DmC with its color-coded fights. The dodge is terrible and there's no real effective way to avoid incoming physical attacks that chase you besides just triple dashing in a direction since there's no lock-on which is a terrible, terrible decision for a character action game.

Apparently you get a parry at some point, which could help get around the shitty dodge and shitty no lock-on, but I really don't want to keep playing to that point.

First game in a while that critics and audiences seem to love and I'm just not enjoying it at all. Even the music isn't great because the tracks are so simple and repetitive to keep the beat gameplay.

Pretty much all it has going for it are the visuals. I didn't like this guy's Evil Within 2 (although I at least enjoyed it more than this game) and don't like this. Just not a fan of John Johanas's game design. Glad I didn't pay for Hi Fi Rush and just playing it on Game Pass.

I'm going to check it out at some point, but it really doesn't look like my thing. It looks like one of those games that reviewers love that don't interest me at all.

----

I've been playing through Borderlands 1 and TPS a tad. Not sure why I decided to fire it up, but the first game is really clicking with me again. I think I might prefer it to 2 (I like 3 more than 2 as well).  I'm playing through Secret Armory of General Knoxx now. I did Claptrap Revolution first, which was maybe a mistake difficulty wise, but it was so tedious. SAGK is great. I just wish it had more fast travel points. Traveling through those long bridges every time is a tad tedious. Thankfully logging in every time isn't necessary.

I think I'm going to play The Pre-sequel more afterward. I have never really gotten into that one. I'm like level 5 or 6 still.

I think the main issue with 2 for me is that I don't care for any of the classes yet. None of them have clicked with me the way classes in the other games have.

If you've played it before Mass Effect 2 is probably the easiest and most enjoyable to finish. The Mass Effect games are big games at about 30 - 40 hours. but not beeg games at 100 - 200 hours like AC Valhalla.

Edge case, but if someone got tired of Horizon by the end, is Horizon 2 worth checking out? It popped up on sony gamepass. Played Horizon when Sony gave it away, think during the pandemic. I liked it but was over the rigamarole of every machine encounter. Or maybe I’ll wait and play it on PC some day.

I did end up playing this last night, and I think that's my issue with it.. it's alot more of the same, which isn't bad, just... There's a fatigue that lingers from the first.  A lot is refined and spruced up, but the battling is ultimately the same so far.  Honestly though, after having finished Metro, I felt more content jumping back into H2 and getting absorbed into it.  It's still just as fun, even though I'm not sure what they were trying to do with the jump/climb mechanics... It's like they couldn't decide on straight up button prompt platforming to AC auto platforming.  It's weird.

Fire Emblem Engage

Made it to the infamous Chapter 11. The game has certainly increased in difficulty again. The battles are great, probably the best in the series.
Seems like most Nintendo games have this 'half way' point now where you get introduced to the 'real' villain and you have to retreat and lick your wounds and then the 'real game' starts.
Xenoblade 3 did it, Metroid Dread and a bunch of other titles.

The story though... still doesn't answer the question "why" any of the events are happening and again that's much like Xenoblade 3.

I'm grinding in Yakuza Like A Dragon so that I may obtain the final achievement and free up some space on both my Xboxen.

It kinda sucks but im just doing half an hour a day on the path to level 99. Quick resume and the lightning fast loading on Series X does help. Looking forward to tackling the apparently very hard final postgame dungeon

Playing YS I on the Steam Deck. Managed to beat the first dungeon/shrine.

Actually the first time I'm playing an YS game and I like it so far.
The map is easy to memorize and the music is fantastic.

Briefly considered going for it after beating the first version of the post game dungeon. Found it fairly easy without prep. Tried the true final version right after and got wrecked. Guides were saying to grind another 20 levels, craft best armors for every member, and play a certain way. I let it be.

Theres a lot of differing opinions on what is actually necessary, level 99 is a must but the best best gear apparently is optional. So yeah I'm just gunning for maxing my level, perhaps reviewing my loadout and maxing out my recovery items, and see how I go. The magic kimchi apparently helps a lot

Finished The Quarry the game was great until the end chapters were it kind of fell flat, but it's hard to tell if that's just because my choices made it unsatisfying.

I feel like the choices towards the end get too random so you have zero idea what will be good or kill your character. It's almost as if they were trying to sell the deluxe edition with a rewind feature or get more game length out of it since you unlock that after you beat it.

When I played Until Dawn blind, I think I lost one character but otherwise got a pretty good ending. Even though I was keeping everyone alive in The Quarry until the last few hours, I lost like half the cast and got a terrible ending in the final chapters. Blah.

Will replay the last few chapters and see if the best ending is more satisfying. I think the character writing in this is really good and I liked the cast, graphics were really good, cutscenes pretty good.

Story was ok, it's not great, it's not bad. The best stuff is the character drama which is like the first 3/4ths of the game.

Oh and one problem I have with the storyline is that

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Because all the werewolves look the same, you can't tell who they are, which is a problem when you have to choose to shoot them and you don't know if it's one of the good characters you want to save or if it's one of the bad werewolves you want to kill

I'm playing The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap for the first time and it's fantastic. Judging from the map and collected items I must be at least halfway through it.

Last night I also started The Last of Us Part II. The TV series left me wanting more.

1 on 1 for PS1 (and Arcades?). A fighting game by way of basketball, all about crossovers. On offense it has a left and right dribble button. Presumably in a player vs player game, it’s fancy rock paper scissor with defense matching the right directions. But defense can pull off combos and grab moves to steal the ball. Actually shooting the ball is timing based with two meters, all while the other player can steal or block. Three point shots need to be perfectly timed. Going for a dunk or layup is easier. It’s all in Japanese and I can’t parse the story to know why there’s a monkey man, angel, and guy wearing a dog as a wig. Need to research if it influenced NBA Ballers PS2.

Minish Cap is great except for the Figurine Collection and Kin Stones.

At some point the reward for a Kin Stone is just another Kin Stone. :lol
It's fun to see Fujibayashi evolve from Oracles to Minish Cap, Skyward Sword and ultimately Breath of the Wild though.

So with The Quarry this is my first time replaying one of these Dark Pictures/Until Dawn games. Just doing the last 90-120 mins across the final 3 chapters to fix my mistakes in the first run.

...how the fuck is there no skip cutscene or fast forward in these games on replays? Like how do you have a game that's entirely a movie with all these branching choices and 180 endings and every time you have to sit through the same scenes over and over? That just seems insane. It's pretty miserable and I'm trying to do other stuff on my phone during cutscenes until the next choice point. A simple high speed FF would have solved this. Wtf is this game design.

imo, these games have zero replayability until like ten years down the line when you've forgotten them. So you better hope you get a satisfying first run.

I'd still give The Quarry about an 8/10 for its strengths.

So wait, in The Quarry once you beat the game you unlock chapter select, but then once you restart a chapter...you lose chapter select until you beat the entire game again? Who the fuck thought up these designs  :doge

I tried some different choices while replaying these last few chapters and lost a character and fucked myself out of the ending route again, and now I'd have to beat the game with a bad ending again which would take another hour+ just to unlock chapter select and go back 2 chapters and then play another hour+ and try not to fuck a single thing up if I wanted to see the actual good ending.

This sucks. I'm going to youtube the everyone lives ending from where I'm at. Supermassive games made terrible decisions on NG+ with this game.

I picked up the Dead Space remake and played through the beginning of chapter 4. I need to look into what has changed. It's been a while since I last played the original, but it is mostly playing like I remember.  The graphics look good, but not amazing. It looks to me like graphics similar to playing 2 and 3 through backwards compatibility on the Xbox.

This is still my favorite of the three main games. 2 was a bit too linear and action focused for me, but still great. 3 was tedious.  I do remember there being a bit more backtracking in the original, but maybe I am just relying on the tracker too much this time.  Combat feels like the later games now.  Zero gravity also feels a bit different from what I remember, but it has been forever since I played it. I remember Isaac feeling a bit slower all around compared to the later games.

Super LTTP but I finally got around to The Last of Us: Part II on PS5

Playing a 10+ hours of Ellie's campaign in which I, the player, am feeling anywhere from uncomfortable to confused to disgusted by almost character decision only to get to the end and have the game tell me "dO yOu FeEl ShItTy? dId U kNoW rEvEnGe iS bAd?!?!?!" DO YOU FEEL BAD FOR HAVING DONE BAD THINGS FOR REVENGE?

 :curious

The chronology is fucked. Why are we jumping between timelines and different characters in such random ways? It might have actually been better if we started the game from Abby's POV and had the Joel event happen later on. Or front loaded the Ellie stuff chronologically without the jumps. Ellie's flashbacks were probably the best part of the game tbh. A few of them didn't even have combat, were just walk and talk, and were still more enjoyable than her Seattle segments.  :lol Dina and Jesse suck. I liked Abby by the end. Lev was probably the best (or at least most sympathetic) character and I ended up enjoying Abby's half more overall. The WLF vs seraphites war and worldbuilding stuff was interesting too. They just completely dropped the ball on Ellie story san flashbacks.  It was Misery porn and completely unjustified genocidal rampage, THE GAME.

Gameplay is rock solid though. They did a good job with the stealth. Animations are top notch. Probably the best graphics from the PS4/Xbone era. So yeah, this might be one of the most inconsistent games I've ever played. Haven't walked away this conflicted about an ending since MGSV. Just missed opportunities and lots of "what ifs"

Idk, I think it's one of my favorite stories in games.

It's basically about Ellie making a bad decision, having many chances to back off, but continuing down the path of revenge and losing everything in the process. It's a depressing unhappy story. That's fine, we could use more feel bad stories in the gaming space.

Ugh. I think I am done with Dead Space remake. I ran into a bug where none of the save stations would work anymore. I tried to get through to the end of the chapter a couple of times but died and had to play several long sections over again each time. Restarting, reinstalling, etc didn't work.

So, I don't get how Supermassive Games and 2k don't take down streams of The Quarry. Like I'm glad they don't so I can watch other routes, but like for a game where the entire game is an interactive 8 hour movie, if you can just watch the movie on youtube...why would you buy it?

I mean I played it for free on PS+ so it's all good, but it just seems like a bad business model. I'm almost done watching the route I got fucked out of twice. It's honestly just as enjoyable watching the youtube version than playing it. Playing it adds nothing and that's not a knock on the game, I still think it's a good choice-driven game movie thing.

Also re-watching the scenes again, I still maintain that while I think the plot is not great, mostly because it's hard to make a coherent satisfying plot with a strong ending in this choice driven format, the character dialogue is extremely natural and well written and the actors all do a great job. Some of my favorite characters in a game in a while. Dylan is MVP for sure. Justice Smith does a really good job with Ryan. Kaitlyn's great too.

Ugh. I think I am done with Dead Space remake. I ran into a bug where none of the save stations would work anymore. I tried to get through to the end of the chapter a couple of times but died and had to play several long sections over again each time. Restarting, reinstalling, etc didn't work.

That fucking sucks. Even the autosave isn't working?

Auto save quit working, too.  I looked into it a bit and the bug appears to be happening since a patch from February.  I don’t see anyone ever respond that it was fixed.  It seems to happen in a few different spots, including chapter 4.

I guess this gives me time to play RE4 Remake now.

Idk, I think it's one of my favorite stories in games.

It's basically about Ellie making a bad decision, having many chances to back off, but continuing down the path of revenge and losing everything in the process. It's a depressing unhappy story. That's fine, we could use more feel bad stories in the gaming space.
Thing is, the player (or at least I) understood very early what the writers were going for, they achieved it but then got stuck making the same statement over and over. Her story started to feel increasingly repetitive and boring as a result.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was waiting for them to come full circle with Ellie's path but instead was like only 40% of a story arc. :lol They tried to show how the killing was wearing on her mentally a few times (Mel specifically) but it didn't really have any culminative effect. If they had gone for a slow decent into madness like Spec Ops: The Line I would have been on board. She had the one panic attack (for what happened to Joel, not her own actions btw) that pushed Ellie into the ending sequence but they didn't go far enough with to really "earn" it. Her characters purpose in the greater plot felt incomplete.

At the very end, I honestly thought the story would have veered toward forgiveness (for both Ellie and Abby) and anti-violence. They had a cool opportunity to do something with the gameplay where the characters came to the same understanding as the player that ALL OF THIS VIOLENCE IS UNNECESSARY.  The WLF/Seraphites war was literally just circular violence breeds violence. Especially for Abby, who had been on both sides of this thing, having killed plenty of Scars, only to realize they are human beings just like her. "No more killing Lev. This has to end" would have been cool with an extended stealth, non-murder sequence. Instead the designers placed fuel canister ammo in the Seraphite village so Abby can commit war crimes with her flamethrower.  :doge
[close]

It just felt very messy. The writers wanted me to feel one thing while I was feeling something completely different.

Even though I just bought Resident Evil 4 I couldn't stop thinking about Yakuza Like a Dragon grind so I got back to that, and..... I BEAT THE TRUE FINAL MILLENNIUM TOWER and got 1000/1000.

Dungeon was rough and took like 2 hours to get through even at max level. Had to actually try and block a lot of the time and almost wiped during a couple of hairy encounters. But you just gotta stay patient, heal anyone thats hurt and not get greedy. Glad thats done

Beat Disco Elysium, now onto Azure. In the midst of Chapter 2, currently the game seems to be ramping up pretty quickly (at least, compared to the rest of the series). This'll probably take me through at least the next month.

Played a couple hours of Ghostwire Tokyo and it seems...boring?

The first hour or so until you get to the sandbox is pretty bad, so many cutscenes and the cutscenes aren't good. After you get to the sandbox it's kind of fun platforming around collecting stuff but yeah the combat stinks and even the movement controls don't feel too good. Plus the story stuff seems zzz.

Just makes me want to play a Yakuza/RGG game.

It feels like the game is only 1st person in another misguided attempt to appeal to western gamers, like having all the cutscenes be 3rd person and then no decent transition to first person when the gameplay starts is bad. Also why are there as many cutscenes as a jrpg...

Not sure if the game would've been any better as a 3rd person Evil Within over the back camera view.
Probably would've been better as a 3rd person action game like Devil May Cry, but Tango has never shown they have 3rd person character action game skills, so probably not a good fit.

Might've been better with turn-based combat. I mean from the couple of hours I played, the game is essentially a huge ripoff of Shin Megami Tensei just replacing demons with ghosts. SMT's empty ghost cities filled with only demons works because turn-based combat is the core that makes it work. This weak simple 1st person combat doesn't have that core to tie the exploration and story together.

Well at least I didn't pay for it (PS+).

Also kind of funny that this month PS+ drops like three collect-a-thon sandbox games at the same time with Ghostwire, Tchia and Immortals: Fenyx Rising. I'm trying them all out, but yeah that's way too much sandbox for me.

I wouldn't mind playing Immortals though, I've heard good things about it outside the story/dialogue. Game looks pretty nice on PS5 and could go for AC x BoTW puzzles with Kid Icarus.

Tchia seems kind of boring too with bad floaty controls like Ghostwire. The setting and the music/dialogue/authenticity of it is refreshing and it's not super long. I might stick with it a few more hours just to see if the gameplay ever gets more fun. But yeah, probably done with my time on Ghostwire.

Immortals is good fun, once you learn to ignore the cringe dialogue.  It eases up on the "humor" in the later half and takes a bit more serious tone.  However, you'll be so OP at that time too, the difficulty drops and you can breeze through the rest of the game quickly.  Solid game though.

Shantae and the Pirates Curse

Fun to play on the 2DS XL and actually the first Shantae game I've played. I dig it a lot a Metroid like experience with a lot of charm and character. The pixel art, animations and music are on point too.

I played a bit of RE4 remake last night. I like most of the changes that I have seen so far, like the crafting screen instead of having to move everything around and combine it.  The remake also looks really good, but I can see the comparisons to RE8.

Is it repairing the knife a spoiler?  I see that it's broken but now how to repair it. The knife was probably overpowered in the original, but I'm missing it so far. The shank thing like in the Last of Us is pretty nice, though. That came in handy during the first encounter with the chainsaw guy. I'm so used to the clunkier aiming in RE4 that it feels weird to be a lot smoother.

Glad to see they kept at least some of the cheesiness of Leon.

Do you still get that collection of PS4 games when you sign up like they announced with the PS5 at the start of this generation?  I'm debating getting a PS5 at some point.  I haven't played most of the games that were included.

You can find various other knives like kitchen knives and also ask the Merchant to repair it.

This game rocks but because of Alien Isolation and Resident Evil 2 I am no longer scared of the enemy chasing you that can't die mechanic. I'm just giggling and running to another room lol. He's far less threatening than the Alien.

If anything they're annoying. Lul

Edit: the chainsaw duel lmao this game owns

Fire Emblem Engage
Game keeps impressing me with how good the gameplay is. Especially the maps, which have so far all been unique, probably a first for Fire Emblem.
Money seems a bit scarce though and there doesn't seem to be a way to easily make money as easy as it is to collect animals, simps, rings and waifu's.

I played a little bit of it (up to where you go into the castle) but hadn't really played it in first person. I need to go back and play more at some point. Maybe after I finish RE4 remake.

I've played a few games lately. I got done with the first chapter of RE4 remake. It was tracking pretty close to the original and then the level layout changed quite a bit. I'm enjoying it other than my aiming feeling really sloppy. I'm not sure how much of that is the dead zone and how much of that is me not aiming well.

I also fired up the Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition. It looks pretty good? I had played it before up until reaching a planet after leaving the ship.  The save didn't get carried over to the new version so I started over. I want to like this game, but something isn't clicking for me like Fallout. There is a bit of jank, but it might be more the story. I've liked most Obsidian games I've played. They are buggy or have weird design choices but good stories.

I also played a bit of Forza Horizon 5, the Hot Wheels expansion.  And a little bit of Doom Eternal.

Beat the main story in Ghost Recon Breakpoint. They added an update some years back that got rid of the live service weapon scaling. Even without having to constantly upgrade your gear, the game is still quite shit. A shame, since the island itself is a pretty cool location.

Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours - it's ayeet.  It's almost a bit too old school like Galaga.  It's mostly swarm enemy patterns and big bosses.. not that much, if any, environmental obstacles.. which I want..  that being said,
R-Type Final 2 demo - This is more like it!  It has it's environments to maneuver through along with the satellite mechanic to use as a tool, which is pretty cool.  Love the updated graphics and lighting too.  Read it gets brutal later on, like Einhander hard, but that's good. The demo was a breeze.  I may jump on Final 3... If it's not insanely expensive.
