This week Doug and Kevin touch on the June NPDs, and discuss how to budget for your nerd habits. On The Playlist we talk about Battlefield 1943 and Final Fantasy VII on the PSP. This week's B7 challenge and Indefensible! revolve around Jackass: The Game and The Fab Four. Then we read and respond to your comments on crappy jobs. Also, Kevin fought the law and nobody won.

SEGMENT ONE: NPD, Hobby Budgeting, I'm Getting Too Old For This Shit

First we tackle the June NPD sales numbers, then Kevin relates the story of his clash with two streetwise detectives.

(12:30) Common sense things you can do to lower the amount you spend on your hobby.

SEGMENT TWO: Playlist, B7 Challenge, Indefensible, Listener Comments

(39:40) Battlefield 1943
(54:45) Final Fantasy VII on PSP

(1:06:10) B7 Challenge - Jackass: The Game. Listen for how you can win all this crap PLUS good stuff.

(1:21:10) Indefensible! Doug, meet Ringo.

(1:30:15) Listener Comments. We read your crappy job stories, and respond to other comments made about last show.

We'll talk to you again on August 3rd!

That's Joe Pesci singing at the end, by the way.

Eel your lucky they didn't roll you....even if they were cops. My next door neighbor got robbed by a cop right after getting out of college.  Good thing everything ended up well.

I think the only reason I didn't get hauled off downtown for grabbing at the knife is that they'd fucked up in a major way regarding procedure.  They did tear my work shirt a little around the neck while they were yanking me out the door.  I forgot to mention I dropped the Zune pretty hard and it still worked perfectly afterwards, so Zune gets a thumbs-up as far as toughness goes!

I was a little looser with the editing this time because I had limited time, and I was also starting to feel like I might be editing it a little too much and cutting away some of the natural conversational flow.  I'm glad it's getting a good response - I was worried leaving my natural stammer fully intact might be distracting.  Nice to know I can ease up on some of the trimming, thanks all.

with respect to budgeting:

- buy new games on sale and save $10 on average or so
- sell your stuff on ebay, it's easy and cheap and the fees aren't THAT bad as mentioned on the podcast
- watch out for digital distribution, can't resell it so it better be worth it or (my preference) it better be worth it AND it better be cheap
- don't sit on a ton of stuff. play what you buy, sell what you play.

also , console game prices are just  :rapetime bad. PC versions can almost always be had for $20 three months later at most.

yeah, i should have added that the fees aren't that bad if you do auction-style listings, but "buy it now" ending fees are pretty hefty for games and dvd movies.

Were you using just the additional buy it now feature or fixed price listings? BIN runs about 5-6% fees, fixed price runs 15% for games. Obviously, regular auction+BIN is the way to go.

PC gaming just doesn't make sense if you like local multiplayer with your friends, not to mention that the consoles get exclusives that take months to reach PC, if ever.

I can't imagine asking my friends to play Call of Duty with me on the PC - the concept escapes them.  All of them have 360s, though.

Local videogame multiplayer blows. Get a good board game like Dominions or Through the Ages. As a bonus, they have very high resell or trade value when you want to change things up (unlike video games).

We have different sorts of friends I suppose. I'm playing two PBEM wargames at the moment for my multiplayer fix. :rock

it can take 20-30 minutes to get back into a fight in WW2 online.

WW2Online is a simulation more than a game. There's a group of people that wants it that way, apparently. (definitely not my cup of tea, certainly).

Trying to cut down game purchases is something I've been trying to do for a while now without much success.  I'm probably going to subscribe to gamefly next time a game I want to play, not buy, comes out; probably Muramasa on Wii or Dark Void on 360.  Even if I get rid of all those games, there are still a good amount that I want to play and own.  It's hard to change bad habits you've had for so long.  But getting burned by games like Prototype or Bionic Commando gets pretty annoying.

that cop story sounds terrifying wow

I would have freaked the fuck out if that happened to me.  I mean, feeling like someone will rob you on the street/alley is bad enough, but at my home? I'd either shit myself or start getting ferocious and animal-like on these people...biting and scratching, whatever.  It's my home! fuck!

This episode was easly one of the better ones, though I can't quite put my finger on why that is :)

Eel said the hand-me-down Zune was his first MP3 player -- yikes.  Welcome to the 21st century.  What took so long?

Eel's advice on budgeting bordered on brilliance, but stopped a step short.  He said, "Look at all that crap around your house -- you can sell it for money to buy more games."  It's not a bad piece of advice, but it barely treats the symptoms.  A slightly more apt (if not wordy) piece of advice would be, "Look at all that crap around your house, and think about how badly you wanted it and whether or not it was really worth the price you paid."  Invariably nothing really lives up to that Day 1 hype, and if you can snap yourself out of it by taking a long gander at the other useless paperwights you blew your money on, then you're being smart about your habit rather than just looking for desperate ways to feed it.

I thought an interesting sidetopic to the budget gaming discussion would be "Games you've bought because of message boards."  Drinky addressed the fact that message boards can overhype games, but that's not really what I mean.  Sometimes I find myself buying stuff not because it's hyped and I think it will be amazing, but just so I can be a part of the immediate post-release discussion.  I coughed up the full price for Too Human on Day 1, just because I wanted to be able to have an opinion on it at the pinnacle of the game's hype and controversy.  I don't regret it, but at the same time I doubt I would have had much interest if it weren't the subject of so much pre-release discussion.

I didn't really get how FF7 wouldn't work as a re-make.  The cutesy, iconic characters wouldn't work as well in a realistic style, but there isn't anything dictating that a realistic style would be mandatory for any remake.

Janet sounds a lot nicer and a lot more cool when Drinky isn't hogging the good microphone.  I actually appreciated the insight on why women's restrooms are almost always far more filthy than men's rooms (despite the fact that a man's aim control is far worse).  Here's something I might like to see her address -- we were recently forced to put a second trash can in the women's room at work, and because apparently it isn't safe or sanitary to let women toss their used "female supplies" into a regular garbage can.  Of course we can't use any signs or labels that read "Put your tampons in here!", so I wonder if women actually understand that's what it's there for.  I obviously don't go in any ladies' rooms outside of work, so I'm not sure if the double trash can setup is particularly common.

Excellent episode gentlemen, it was one of the best imo. I am alot like you two when it comes to frivolous purchases. I don't collect anything, but I make myself sell games that have been sitting around or other expendable items in order to justify the purchase.

I agree about the FF7 comments, for the most part. I never finished it, and only first pircked it up a few years ago. There is a certain amount of charm that comes from the game's graphic and animation shortcomings. Unlike Doug, I think that the story is entirely palatable compared to other RPGs older and current, in spite of many eyerolling moments and continuity errors. Perhaps its the way the story is presented

On the subject of Gamefly and the saving money that way, yes, I've used the "it's a brand new game, and I bought it cheap" through them.

It was Infamous.  I  had it queued up before it came out, and as soon as they shipped it out, it was the same weekend they had a memorial weekend coupon for like $10, on top of a $5 coupon they give every 3 months, that I went ahead and purchased it before it got here.  Got it for like $35 brand new.

yeah, gamefly is great for cheap new game buying if you play it smart and put games in your Q a month or so ahead of time.

Kestastrophe, you asked where I got that Cypress Hill cover on the website.  I answered there, but I'll post it here, too.

That cover is by Richard Cheese, lounge singer supreme, from his album Tuxicity. It contains 18 awesome lounge versions of popular music. Read the track list here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuxicity

He's probably most famous for his cover of Disturbed's "Down With the Sickness" from the Dawn of the Dead 2004 soundtrack.

Haha, no, I said it was my first really good mp3 player, with video playback and wifi and a nice screen.  I usually buy cheap players because I use them at work, and within weeks they're coated in paint dust.

lol at this weeks indefensible.

For a band with a long history, it was really funny hearing Prole struggle to say anything good about them.

I think it's such a sad (funny) inditement of Prole's irrational hatred of the Beatles that he can put up a better defense for loli rpgs  :lol

I think an FF7 remake could work.  The setting is fairly unique (actually, maybe not anymore, especially with FFXIII now) and the Gold Saucer is still awesome.  I've only completely finished FF7 once.  For me, the Gold Saucer is the end point whenever I replay the game.

Yup, and you did that well.

But, at the same time, I was really looking forward to hearing you say all of the shit you definitely don't think about the beatles.

I'm not a big Beatles listener, but one thing that the Beatles did that I found very interesting was employ a lot of avant garde techniques in their later productions... especially the use of 'musique concrete' concepts and pioneering the whole 'world music' movement with Ravi Shankar and all.

btw, the next Indefensible should be the Nintendo Virtual Boy
