for what Origin is, it's a pretty damn good service. at least so far it has had decent deals for recent-ish games (in the past month, DS2/Bullestorm for 13, Crysis 2 for 22). you can register retail purchased games and get a digital copy. united friends list between games, with deeper integration. great customer support.
problem is that it is an EA-exclusive service. I don't know if they want it to grow and include other publishers, but that's the draw of steam. It's one program/platform for PC gaming. and the mix-up between Steam and Origin isn't all on EA. iirc, Steam's policies clash with EA's regarding DLC. It mostly sets a worrying precedent for the future of this junk. Multiple accounts for multiple publishers, etc. Ubisoft already has their Uplay thing and sells games, as did EA before they evolved it into Origin.
that said, I'm buying retail copies of Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3.
