Been going through some random ftp with images and found this. It really bothers me that I have no quick explanation why it doesn't work that way. It keeps bugging me. The troll is working. FML.

I think as the number of corners are removed and approach infinity, the area of the shape that was once the square *will* approach the exact area of the circle, however, the shape is not a circle, it's an infinite number of infinitesmal corners who's total length with always be 4.

If you were to travel along the shape, you'd never be travelling tangent to the circle (well except when the corners are tangent) as you would if this shape converged as a circle, but would instead be traversing an infinite number of corners, up and down up and down...

The perimeter could be any number, though. 4 is just the number he chose. So its not like pi equals 4 even in his diagram. Pi simply equals the perimeter of a square that has 4 tangents touching the circle.

There are other problems too, but its been forever since I took geometry.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. The square will continue to become more and more like a circle, but never quite a circle.

not really, representing numbers as limits approaching infinity are quite common in math, which is what math troll is playing off of.

for instance,

PI is often represented as equalling the convergence of the series: 4/1 - 4/3 + 4/5 - 4/7 + 4/9 - 4/11 + 4/13 ...

Math troll makes it appear that you can continually break down the corners in such a way that the modified rectangle will smooth out and converge into a circle.

But you break it down a gajillion times, you still just have a gajillion vertical lines and a gajillion horiztonal lines that sort of look like a circle from afar. But they never start to form a proper curve like a circle, it's still just a series of increasingly small corners. This doesn't change if you do it a gajillion-gajillion times, or an infinite number of times. Any point the on math troll's shape is still either vertical or horizontal, not tangent to the circle - and increasing the number doesn't change this characteristic.
