No Taco Bells around, but I do have 4 Mexican restaurants around to choose from, all with fucking super huge plates for cheap that taste extremely fucking good.
Whoo!!
Great, I've worked myself up for Mexican and I'm at work.
Great, I've worked myself up for Mexican and I'm in Japan.
surely the Japanese have figured out a way to take Mexican food, make it tastier and more fulfilling haven't they?
Nope. They don't really get Mexican food.
They really don't.
El Pancho, in Shinsaibashi, is the only Mexican place still standing. It gets the environment spot-on, but the food is a little bland and too small. The best thing they have are Margaritas using the yuzu fruit (citron), which are bliss-inducing. That's an improvement on the original, but everything else is just a little sad. Also, chips and salsa are about $10 at the current exchange rate.
Prior to El Pancho, there was a place called Pink Adobe. They also had a great environment: an outdoor patio dining area in mildly Spanish colonial decor -- lovely. I ordered the taco platter for lunch. It arrived; the ground beef was served cold, and instead of sour cream, it was a side of whipped cream. And, no, I'm not joking. It may have been
creme fraiche, since I've never had that, but it wasn't anything which I'd ever seen served with tacos in California.
