I just saw that RE8 completely bombed in Japan down from RE3R even.
I wonder what the reasoning is. RE3R wasn't that long ago, have tens of thousands of Japanese players who would play RE sold their PS4s and moved to Switch only at this point? Or is it because Japanese players aren't big on FPS? RE7 did fine, but PS4 was healthier at that point and RE still had a lot of hype. Was a huge drop from RE6 still.
I'm sure RE8 will do fine worldwide. And I didn't expect it to do anything special in Japan. Just surprised it's down from like 180k -> 140k opening from RE3R.
FPS games don't do that hot in Japan in general and they really advertised mostly the action parts of this game and the vampire lady.
I was quite surprised how different the tone of the game is compared to the trailers. Much more silly/cringe/80's movie as you would expect from Resident Evil and far less 'serious'.
The vampire lady plays a very small role in the game overall.
I expect PS5 shortages also have something to do with this. I was quite surprised to see how well it runs on Xbox One X and PS4 (Pro).
This game was announced as a PS5 game first and they didn't put the last gen versions on the radar until they released the demo.
There is also the part where Capcom says it isn't Resident Evil 8 but Resident Evil Village and still put a VIII in the logo. Overall the marketing was just weird.
There's a rumor that Capcom is working on a (timed exclusive) Resident Evil game for Switch releasing late 2021 or early 2022 but it hasn't surfaced yet.
