ROFL

I got a chance to play a Vita recently and man, it's a fine piece of kit.  If there was one word to describe the Vita hardware, it would be "quality"; unlike the 3DS where you have to hold it at an awkward angle to play it in 3D and feels like cheap Nintendo crapola we've all come to know and love.  Unfortunately, the Vita is heading towards certain failure so I'm like a vulture circling over the dying animal known as Vita at this point.  I'm hoping it will be like the Dreamcast after the cancellation notice where all of a sudden, everyone was trying to unload their Dreamcast wares as quickly as possible, netting all kinds of great deals.  Why get Uncharted for $40 when I can get it for $5?

Why is chartz unable to form legitimate data sharing partnerships within the industry? I mean how hard can it be to hire a statistician, a mathematician and reach out to retail/digital to get a good amount of data to plug into mathematical models?

Why would "the industry" give out their data to some random dood with a free website when they make monies on selling access to said data?

Regardless of the financial part, why would say Gamestop, give their sensitive data to someone with a website who has no record or history of dealing with it?

I mean how hard can it be to hire a statistician, a mathematician and reach out to retail/digital to get a good amount of data to plug into mathematical models?

I think you're underestimating how many people it takes to do this.

Never free, they can share in subscription/ad monies.

Point(s) taken, just find it odd that chartz have no desire to legitimize themselves in any way.

Actually, taking this further lets say for example we as boreans want to start up a new tracker. How many staff and which positions would you think needs filling? Ignore data acquisition for the moment, let's assume it's a trivial matter of promising x% of subs. Let us also assume we are doing one territory, U.S. for example.

Data acquisition is everything. The rest is just some shady* science that surprisingly works in most of the cases.

VG Charts problem is data acquisition.Technically you would need like 0 people...just one computer

For data I'd go to the biggest distributors and track shipped numbers at first. Not really useful to anyone I would imagine (except for myself as an upper ceiling in my sell through model) , but it starts the process of building a predictive mathematical model.

I actually studied math at uni for 3 years. Stats for 2 years. (Was an elective, dropped it in my last year because i was already covered by math). I studied Bsc -computer science, math, physics, stats, applied math (1 year) Went into the job market thereafter and was really unhappy with my options so I took a job but studied on.  I'm 6 months from completing a Bcom in economics, management and business management currently. So it's not like I dont have a background in these things.

Xbox 360 continues to hold the number one spot in the U.S., selling more units than any other console for 14 months straight. Sustained consumer demand for Xbox 360 and Kinect have helped maintain its number one spot, even in the seventh year on the market.

February 2012 U.S. NPD highlights:
· Holding 42 percent share of current-generation console sales, Xbox 360 sold 426,000 units in February, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. This marks the 12th consecutive month Xbox 360 has held more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share. (Source: NPD Group, February 2012)
· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in February (hardware, software and accessories) reached $383 million, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, February 2012)
· During the month of February, Xbox 360 held five of the top 10 U.S. console game titles including: "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," "UFC Undisputed," "NBA 2K12," and "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim." (Source: NPD Group, February 2012)

This year, Xbox 360 will again deliver an interactive entertainment portfolio of blockbuster titles, experiences and add-on content, including additions to the famed "Halo" and "Fable" franchises. The more than 50 Xbox LIVE entertainment partners will continue to expand with many more launching throughout the year. Later this year, Xbox 360 will deliver entirely new groundbreaking experiences like "Kinect Sesame Street TV" and "Nat Geo TV," forever changing the way people interact with their favorite TV entertainment.

Another month, another milestone for Mario: Super Mario Galaxy became the ninth Wii game to sell more than 5 million units in the United States, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. The Wii system, which crossed 39 million units sold in February, now has nearly twice as many 5-million sellers* as competing current-generation consoles combined.

“Wii continues its record-breaking run by surpassing 39 million units in its 64th month, a pace that is unmatched by any other system in U.S. history,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Titles like Super Mario Galaxy help explain why Wii continues to resonate with consumers. The fact that one of the best-reviewed games of all time is available for a suggested retail price of $19.99 speaks to Nintendo’s combination of quality, family fun and value that is unmatched in our industry.”

Other Nintendo milestones achieved in February include:

Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo 3DS each sold more than 100,000 units, bringing the life-to-date totals to more than 1.85 million and 1.45 million respectively.
Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version for Nintendo DS have now sold more than 4 million combined units in the United States.
Nintendo sold 625,000 total hardware units in February and saw double-digit growth across each of its product lines compared to January. This includes:

Nintendo 3DS: 262,000, a 53 percent increase
Wii: 228,000, a 50 percent increase
Nintendo DS: 135,000, a 76 percent increase
Total: 625,000, a 57 percent increase

* The Wii games to surpass 5 million units sold in the United States include: Wii Play (13.06 million), Mario Kart Wii (11.3 million), New Super Mario Bros. Wii (8.86 million), Wii Fit (8.18 million), Wii FitPlus (7.32 million), Wii Sports Resort (6.45 million), Just Dance 2 (5.61) million, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (5.43 million) and Super Mario Galaxy (5.04 million). Just Dance 3 is poised to be the next title added to the list with a lifetime total of 4.61 million.

Too bad we're not getting any Sony numbers.

luckily with the power of math we can determine the vita's numbers within a range.

that range is 218k - 230k.

The 3DS did double that in the same time frame. At the same price.

Vita sales are, of course, comically terrible - but those 3DS sales seem really weak too.  I would think a relatively new platform would be selling much more than barely better than the Wii in its twilight years.

that *would* be awfully surprising

if mercs had sold well

if

however, the reality is: revelaitons could have sold 4x mercs first month and still come in under uncharted vita.

mercs came to a good total but it did so by legging it out.  we'll see how rev does.

If that's the case I can't see Rev trending wildly differently, especially seeing it's a quality title with good press (as opposed to the skimpy Mercs and the save lock debacle.) I wonder if Capcom's thinking about porting it now or what.

Declining market and competing against more popular smartphones and tablets. And this is the initial push where the hardcore buy it. Now that the initial rush is over the numbers will drop month by month most likely just as they have in Japan. And that's where the market is stronger for that kind of product.

NPD Launch Months

GBA - 870K
PSP - 619K
NDS - 480K
3DS - ~400K
PSV - 225K

A reminder, the 3DS was the same price at its launch.

It's even better with the dates!

GBA June 11, 2001 870K
PSP March 24, 2005 619K
NDS November 21, 2004 480K
3DS March 27, 2011 ~400K
PSV February 22, 2012 225K

The sales actually seem worse the more you look at them.  If I was funding a Vita game I would cancel it and move it to a platform that wouldn't actively hurt its chances on the market.

Im really starting to buy into the school of thought that there are four sets of console gamers
- Nintendo fans
- Motion/Casuals/Party gamers
- Cod/Madden/FIFA gamers
- Us

It's like these people play nothing else but CoD. The fuck.

I have friends who buy nothing but CoD, Madden and Tiger Woods. I've got another friend who buys nothing but Assassin's Creed games for this PS3.

Seems to me that regardless of how Vita does over its lifetime, this will be the last portable system Sony puts out.  I expect a Nintendo only handheld future 10 years from now.

dood, you have *every* other thread on the bore to say "who cares about sales".  This is the sales thread.  Start wanking to numbers or gtfo.

wank.

 :pimp

The only sales numbers I really ever care about are my stupid mecha games.

If they add physical controls, then I could see that too.

Also the day they get a new Mario/Zelda on iOS will be the greatest meltdown of the internets.

put pokemon on iOS and I might try it again

iirc Japan isn't as keen on the apple as western folks, and the nintendo is still popular with the Japanese and children.

and the vita numbers, I'm sure they're bad, but I don't know why they're surprisingly bad when it's up against the considerably cheaper 3DS with its higher profile library.  Vita is ~$100 more than the 3DS when you add in the $20 minimum 4 gig memory stick.
