Worst part is that I read the link title and thought "that sounds about right."
Conservation used to be fairly bipartisan, even if environmentalism has more closely been associated with Democrats. But climate change has turned into a very, very partisan issue (not gonna link-chase right now, but I think the percent of Republicans saying it's a sham has increased independent of actual scientific news) and that colors political opinions about "the environment."
People still tend to care across the spectrum when there are clear public health issues. Folks who don't respond to "saving the environment" will still give a shit about stuff getting in the air, drinking water, etc. It's just the really important but distant and intangible stuff that's easy to think of in tribal rather than real terms.
