But really, there's virtually no privacy whatsoever anymore, thanks to our current digital world. If it's not the government, it's Facebook themselves, lapping up all your information and selling it to the highest bidder in the name of advertising. Dismantling this program won't change any of that, but maybe it will shed a little light on the wider problems.

Well to be fair facebook isn't stockpiling information you didn't already offer up yourself. Invading the privacy of a personal call is much worse imo.

I don't think this is a matter of left v right. It seems clear to me that each president will become progressively worse than the previous one on civil liberties and gross executive power as long as the war on terror lasts. And despite what Obama says, it looks like a forever war.

Still, I sure as hell would not have guessed that Obama would be far worse on civil liberties than Bush.

Obama quotes:

Quote
"When it comes to telephone calls, nobody is listening to your telephone calls. That's not what this program's about," Obama said.

Quote
"With respect to all these programs, the relevant intelligence committees are fully briefed on these programs."

Quote
He added: "If the intelligence community then actually wants to listen to a phone call, they have to go back to a federal judge just like they would in a criminal investigation. So I want to be very clear: some of the hype that we've hearing over the last day or so, nobody's listening to the content of peoples' phone calls."

Quote
"This does not apply to U.S. citizens, and this does not apply to people living in the United States," Obama said in California.

Quote
"I came in with healthy skepticism about these programs," he added. "I can say that evaluating these programs they make a difference to anticipate and prevent possible terrorist activity."

Who makes calls anymore, though?  Doesn't everybody just fucking text each other?  I mean, my voicemail message even says, "You've reached so and so, WHY DIDN'T YOU TEXT ME???"  No one actually LIKES talking on the fucking phone.

Other than a couple of nutbars in the House, I doubt you'll see many elected GOP officials criticize the administration for this.  This sort of thing is a feature of what our country is now, not a bug.

Liberals dismissing civil liberty abuses, republicans crying over Patriot Act policies. Amazing.

Overall Obama handled himself well in the press conference...but the distortions were jarring. This is all ok...because congress approved it, and we all voted for our congressmen? Seriously? Interestingly he also seemed to basically admit "I thought the world should work one way when I was elected, then I saw all this shit and realized I was wrong." IE terrorist attacks stopped by surveillance abuses, civil liberty abuses, etc. But all this basically means the terrorists have won.

perfect timing for the Xbox One's always on Kinect camera tho :heh

Why would a true republican support the patriot act? It would behove most of you to understand our core policies like "limited government involvement" before you make snarky comments that make you seem less world aware than a 7 year old.

We didn't vote on the patriot act, ladies and gentlemen, because it would have failed in a legendary manner.

Obama has impinged upon our freedoms several degrees worse than Bush/Cheney ever did. Deal with it.

Mandark put it better :'(

Real conservatives tend to pop up when discussing things endemic to both parties, but done by the Democrats

"Of course I was protesting deficit spending under Bush"
"Of course I was opposed the Patriot Act"
"Of course I'm opposed to arresting gay men in public bathrooms after I was arrested.  It's a civil rights issue!"

That sort of thing

I'm not sure how to respond.  I mean sure, there are politicians and people on the right who oppose the Patriot Act, but that's plenty of people with irrelevant views.  It's been some 12 years and you've managed to what exactly?  Let us know that Obama is doing the same thing as Bush?  You guys are doing the lords work, truly.

Well what did you do to defend civil liberties before Obama was inaugurated?  Support primary or general election challengers who would repeal the PATRIOT Act?  Join a group like the ACLU, or Conservatives For the Fourth Amendment?

Surely you at least have an online record of making surly posts towards anyone defending the Bush/Yoo policies of surveillance/detention/torture/etc.
