I think people liked Ezra because of his passion for health care reform. He seemed to be 'the guy' when it came to arguing points on the internet.

Klein staking out a corner as a lay expert on health policy just ahead of the ACA becoming the dominant political story for a year gave him a huge leg up.  Before that he was just a dilettante general purpose mainstream liberal blogger like Yglesias, Kevin Drum, Atrios, etc.

He's never been terribly good but the salt he elicits from crappy older pundits is great.

Quote
Primary voters who said Perry was their first choice for the GOP presidential nominee were the the biggest believers that a takeover was on its way, according to the poll. The survey found a whopping 76 percent of Perry supporters said they believed the government was trying to take over Texas, followed by 56 percent of Cruz supporters.

Compensation was on the table at first, but the cons at first.

It may be in the bill that was eventually passed though.

The trade thing kind of depends on whether or not you think NAFTA directly killed a lot of jobs. I started looking through the literature on that.

Note that even if there's a loss of jobs, under the Kaldor-Hicks efficiency model the trade deal could still be beneficial if we put in provisions to assist the workers who lose their jobs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaldor%E2%80%93Hicks_efficiency

I feel like we tend to never do the compensation part of Kaldor Hicks though.

Good luck passing any jobs training plans with this congress. Those jobs aren't coming back, and those workers won't be helped.

John Bolton is going to announce he's running tomorrow.

He must have saw Jeb staking out a position even his brother wouldn't take and thinks he can top it.

It's not butthurt. It's entitlement. When a network trashes him for 8 years and he calls them out on things they do, that isn't delusional. What cons should be saying is, "ya, I remember when fox said that."

I love the conservative talking point of "Don't judge Jeb by his brother! He's his own person. You have to judge him on his own merits!" then after taking a slight breath, "Of course you can't vote for Hillary. I mean, just look at what her husband did!"

So far Hillary hasn't come out and said "Knowing what we know now, I would have fucked Monica too."

But...isn't it because the train wasn't using safety protocols and was going too fast? And isn't the lack of safety software due to local disputes with railroad handlers?

more news is coming out i guess, i had just noticed a drudge headline that referenced speed as the issue.  someone just told me he slammed hard on the e-brakes too.

republicans cut 250 billion from amtrak, that isnt the issue here but it does highlight what theyre trying to do to amtrak

Speaking of Clinton you all need to follow Jennifer Rubin on twitter. Her pure hatred of Obama/Cinton is something to behold. Plus her election predictions/poll skewing is always entertaining. Loyal to the end, I expect her to go down with the ship well into late October 2016 when it's clear Hillary will win. Her Romney optimism was amazing, and let's not forget her nonstop articles about how Gabriel Gomez was totally going to win Kerry's seat in MA.

I hope you get to finish your Soloman Grundy-esque coverage of Jeb Bush, GR.

Quote from: Jeb Bush on Friday
I am a failure as a human being, just as the war in Iraq was a failure. I do not deserve to live and my life is worthy of only the most hateful scorn and derision. I know now that I must fight my brother to the death in order to gain even the most meager redemption.

Shit, you'd think we'd be entering armageddon by the way some Christians responded to that story that dropped a couple days ago about 92% of all people in the US are no longer religiously affiliated.

The 188%, the oppressed majority.
They're a dying breed brehs, pretty soon it'll only be the 687%

Even most republicans admit that George W was largely a mistake.
And despite the fact that Bush sr. was actually a pretty good president republicans HATE him. It makes no sense.

PD, Perry had his back surgery in late July, he was still wearing a back brace and couldn't turn his torso fully until like the end of the year. The only reason he got in the race was because of his poll and cash lead, he should have always punted to after he left office.

Perry in the Texas governor debates is a pretty different debater, more cocky and aggressive. He, like most of the 2012 candidates, didn't do much prep before jumping in. And with those ten thousand debates..."Oops!" was just a notable response.

The key question is...will he get Dean Cain's endorsement again?

I'm already on record as kind of agreeing with you on this Walrus, but let's be real: this bill has nothing to do with helping people eat more healthy. It has everything to do with punishing and stigmatizing poor people. The list of banned foods is ludicrous. Potatoes? Really?

And the same people who want to pretend like this is all about cutting costs wouldn't dare cut corn syrup subsidies.

Republicans, they hate government regulation*.

*unless you run an abortion clinic, want an abortion yourself, buy/sell legal weed, want the same legal protections as your straight married friends, want to teach evolution/climate change to your students, are poor, work for a hated govt agency (IRS, NPR), want to make voting easier...

but they hate the shit out of government regulation, that's for darn sure.

An administration tight with Goldman Sachs and other powers in Wall Street, what could go wrong?

Quote from: Wisconsin
Under this bill, DHS must require that not less than 67 percent of the SNAP
benefits used by a recipient in a month be used to purchase any of the following foods:
foods that are on the list of foods authorized for the federal special supplemental
nutrition program for women, infants, and children (WIC foods); beef; pork; chicken;
fish; fresh produce; and fresh, frozen, and canned white potatoes. In addition, DHS
must prohibit using SNAP benefits for the purchase of crab, lobster, shrimp, or any
other shellfish.
I read "women, infants, and children" as part of the list of foods that were allowed at first.
