I don't know what's going on with Carson but it's disturbing. I understand the deep appeal he has with conservatives, specifically Evangelicals and those who herald the tokenism aspect of black republicans*. The thing that blows me away is his conduct. He has displayed a stunning level of ignorance on multiple occasions. Like Obama and Jeb Bush, he thinks while he talks...but unlike them he comes off as completely unversed on a vast majority of subjects. He's a doctor yet doesn't seem to understand how Medicare works for christs sake...

I wouldn't be stunned at all if we find out he's severely in debt due to a Ponzi scheme or something. Why he went from reserved surgeon to barnstorming speaker...I don't know, but debt seems like a possibility to me. He genuinely seems like a complete idiot on most non-medicine/surgery issues.

His whole story is like a carefully crafted narrative to boost his appeal to white people while also being really racist:

-Violent, inner-city youth who attacked friends and his mom
-Found Jesus along the way
-Pulled his self up by his own bootstraps
-Was the best ROTC in the whole city
-But became a really awesome doctor instead
-Believes any and all far-right fringe conservative nonsense
-Is a true "African-American" unlike Obama

This is all so baffling... I don't understand if the whole "attacked with an hammer" / "tried to stab a friend" -which, as far as I understand, were told by him in his own bio- is a tall tale or some misplaced show of honesty from his part... neither option shines a good light on him.

It's not all that baffling if you concede some kind of bullshit narrative like Rumbler alluded to. Also he seems strongly the type that is definitely unhinged and the mask is coming off in public now.

being a good, or even great, surgeon doesn't really require critical thinking. However, being good with his hands probably has some correlation with being a good at fucking. So you should still be able to ~~desire~~ respect him as a member of the black community imo.

I agree with Rumbler but I think the Christian angle is bigger than the racial angle here. Plenty of Evangelicals and Seventh Day Adventists place a lot of emphasis on testimony - ie "before Christ I was xyz, now I'm better." Carson being some violent degenerate who found Christ and became a peaceful man appeals to that mindset, and is partially why he's doing so well amongst Evangelicals in Iowa right now. He speaks their language, and has for years.

From his interviews, I think he believes god gave him the goal/destiny to become president and so this implosion over his identity was inevitable. He probably should just quietly admit that he exaggerated some things and keep trying to build up his black doctor friend image.

My prediction/hope is he stays in the race for a few months before caving in so that all his supporters go to Trump at a time when the polls matter.

He's going to get away with this because these stories are told every day in churches across America. These are testimonials and parables. Attacking them is like attacking faith in of itself. It doesn't help that Politico apparently jumped out the gate without doing all its due diligence (shocking).

Regular people will think he's crazy but Evangelicals and GOP primary voters? Nope.
