It's been Venezuela for years if you're talking reserves (Id din't say that though I said producer).  We're the largest producer if you add in natural gas and other fuels, but for pure oil production it's been waffling between Russia and SA for years (probably Russia this year because they're dumb and desperate for money because they can't run an economy for shit)

Well, he's not exactly wrong on that first sentence, though. The USA and the former European "Great Powers" do that shit all the time. Doesn't mean voters should just shrug a possible influence off, if true that's certainly part of what they should know, but it's always funny to see the indignation when that shit is pulled the other way. Russia being propped up as a major scarecrow as tall as the Soviet menace was sometimes perceived to be is also a bit of a joke. The sheer demonization is ridiculous and it do participate in unneeded alienation of a major international actor. Obviously the USA & Western Europe will always in the near future stand on a different line than Russia & China but some sort of basic agreement on what sort of international statu quo is acceptable for all could maybe have helped in managing Syria, for instance.

And I say that as a stauch Atlantist who agrees that Polish or Baltic fears are not totally unfounded. Putin's Russia has plenty of real faults, no need adding a layer of fantasy over that.

The Russian connection isn't going to stick.  It's going to be tough to prove why Russian investment in Trump's properties is bad yet something like this is supposed to be harmless.  They can't so it will disappear.  A similar thing happened with the mafia connections months ago.

That's what happens when you have political candidates who are thoroughly corrupted: you lose the "moral high ground" angle of your campaign.  If it was someone who wasn't as bad as Clinton, it would be very bad for Trump but welp, here we are.
