Nintendo has a huge advantage over Microsoft and that's in their game designers. Which means that long after Microsoft has exhausted their creativity pipeline (in the next three to six months) Nintendo will continue to reinvent gameplay paradigms and tap into both classic and original IPs to show the strength of the Nintendo brand. Microsoft doesn't have that sense of a principle beyond corporate bureaucratic inertia that keeps it in the industry, while Nintendo has a reason to be in the industry, to make fun games.

I think a perfect example of this is while Microsoft may own Rare, a Nintendo console will be the only place people will be able to play it loud as Cranky Kong.

Wii U is just showing the same thing the 3DS did: Nintendo can't put out hardware without having support in third parties and showing it.

Unfortunately, the handheld market in the US/Western world is drying up. Is there a market for it? Sure but it's going away.

Can Nintendo float for a while? Sure. But you're damn foolish if you don't think mobile is threatening the one arena that keeps them afloat.

As soon as mobile is able to run Mario+more through emulation and modern titles at cheap prices + reasonable battery life? GG.

Why is the Wii a fuck you though? Didn't it have two great Mario games? People seem to like them more than Sunshine. I don't understand Zelda fans so I don't know which system had the better Zelda. As someone who dosen't care about Nintendo games the Wii still had games they published that interested me like Xenobalde(GoTG), The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Sin and Punishment 2, and also there were the No More Heroes games. I played all of those more than anything on my RE4 machine.

I think highly enough of the Wii that I bought one of those bluetooth module replacements the day mine died since I had wanted to finish off some backlog there. (Like Twilight Princess finally.)

Of course, the Wii's been sitting on my console cart with its faceplate off with the module replacement lying next to it for about seven months now.

I'd argue Nintendo tries more than any other company to change up their hardware niche. From the virtual boy to the minidisk lunchbox gamecube to the DS and Wii.

They are totally conservative as far as software. But they see the mobile smartphone market and are probably going to address it in some radical way. Maybe by making a smartphone that has attachable physical buttons (like those special iPhone cases).



Seriously, they could merge the phone and handheld market. They wouldn't be the first to try but they could actually do it. They'll catch the early audience with those old but rabid fanbase Nintendo titles. And third parties (both big game studios and mobile developers) will jump on it because it's such a unique market position. Maybe the only problem is figuring out a way to have backwards compatibility with the dual-screen DS titles.

Best part of this idea is that the hardware costs are becoming dirt cheap because of how fast smarphone hardware improves. Release a new phone every 2 years in line with contract renewals. Make the same case work among all models. And run it on a forked version of Android (so you can't pirate).
