There's nothing wrong in enjoying fiction, but yeah the default description of world that only be crapsack is certainly intentional in a way. Also there's nothing funnier than seeing people seriously plan survivalist fantasies on the base of a completely bogus scenario.

EDIT : I also remember someone talking about his family experiences in war (WWII in Europe, IIRC) that jam, butter, chocolate, fabric & tissue etc were the actual useful and valuable commodities for most common everyman as you could easily trade it for other useful stuff with your neighbors. Certainly not a scenario of every man for himself : Society is way more resilient than a lot of people give it credit for barring maybe an implausible utter and total collapse (in which case 99% of the people will probably have bigger problems than playing their alpha dog fantasies).
