Let me ask you a question as well.

If a black woman walks into a store with her white friend and notices that she is being followed closely around the store but her friend is not, is she “paranoid” for thinking it racially motivated?

Maybe? If someone is predisposed to being paranoid about racism, something innocent could absolutely be misconstrued. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, because it does, but not every instance of someone walking up the same aisle as you is profiling.

You keep making it into a thing it’s not. “Not every x is x” “not every” “it isn’t always”. Really easy to use that reply to literally every case of someone thinking something is racist that you don’t agree with. A really easy way to dismiss anything.

You agree it happens. We also agree that it isn’t happening LITERALLY at all times. Where the disconnect seems to be is that you think it’s much rarer than it actually is.

What is the instinct within you to immediately say “well not everything is profiling. Maybe she is paranoid.”

I'm not saying ignore the reality of your lived experience. I'm saying I won't judge you merely by your skin color and you won't judge me. Being white doesn't intrinsically make me a bad person just as your skin color doesn't make you a bad person. It's how we live our lives that defines who we are more than the immutable qualities. See what I'm saying?

The fact that you think “being white doesn’t automatically make me a bad person” is what I need to hear shows me that you really don’t understand my perspective at all, man. I love a lot of white people! My very best friends are white. (Lol)

There are many ways white supremacy manifests itself. It is near-universal to western culture and almost completely inescapable. There are many who intentionally buy into it, and many more unintentionally.

So help me understand your perspective.

I’ll give the most obvious example I can think of.

“You’re very articulate.” I’ve heard this a lot. As a black person, when you speak very well, that’s notable to a lot of people. When you hear it enough times, you start to realize quickly that, not every time, but frequently, the implicit idea is that “It is uncommon for a black person to speak so well.” Is that true? Honestly, yeah, maybe? But to say something so patronizing to me, like if someone said “you’re cute for a black person”, which I’ve also heard blatantly. It’s annoying. Am I gonna call anyone stupid or a bad person for that specifically? No. But I think it’s a problematic thing to say to a black person.

Maybe you could make the argument and get me to admit that the nature and atmosphere of Era makes me more low tolerance for this kind of ignorance, and I express that in too confrontational a way. But it’s displayed on a GRAND scale, in many different ways.  And getting the same exact questions from the same exact people over and over and over again and they just keep slapping you over the face saying I don’t actually care about your answers and I just want to question you despite having no frame of reference or perspective for anything you’re talking about I still feel that my opinion about this is as valid as yours. It just gets grating.

 The truth is simply that there are many more things I believe to be problematic and indicative of white supremacy than you do.  Maybe I need to get better about not immediately calling anyone that is ignorant about this reality a bad person.  But I would like you to understand that I will never stop pointing out this reality.

 And if the first thing you want to say in reply to this post is pointing out to me that the articulate thing isn’t racist at all and I’m being totally paranoid then you’re just proving my point.

I followed that thread and it's ridiculous how some of the people in there think they are some moral, progressive champions fighting bigotry.

IrishNinja spent most of that thread making excuses for his support for people airing anti-Semetic and homophobic view. Sure, he got a lot of push back, but is he banned? Nope.

Try to pull what IrishNinja did in regards to sexism or racism and you know you would have gotten at least a one week ban, if not a perm ban. But IrishNinja skates off scott free.

How does that affect your life more than your anger issues

I think what stufte is trying to say is that hyperfocusing on the stuff outside of your control becomes a pathology and stalls or impedes the development of yourself as an individual, which is 100% in your control and also much more impactful on your life than these other things

I think I do a pretty good job pointing out problematic or offensive things while also squeezing in time for a 25-hour work week, full time college, eating, sleeping, video games, screenwriting, making short films, personal hygiene and hanging with friends.

My best job, and the one that shaped me in a lot of ways was a sign shop where I was an atheist white boy working with an undocumented catholic mexican guy and working for a traditional muslim husband and wife. We had amazing conversations about life, our beliefs and anything else we could come up with to talk about. Previous to that I worked for Mark Leno (a gay jewish politician) at his sign shop in SF. He taught me to think critically, to ask questions and surround yourself with all kinds of people. It's the reason I poke and prod you Cream. It's the reason I push against the status quo on ERA (and on GAF previously). I like to challenge minds, and have mine challenged. I change my mind all the time about things, and you should be open to that as well. We all should.

No I get it. We ALL get annoying "problematic" shit from others. I'm "watching the kids" instead of being a father. I'm stared at as if I'm some creepy dude if I'm sitting at a park (even if I'm there with my kids). Women speed up if I'm walking behind them like I'm going to rape them or something. I think a lot of people making up genders do so because of an inability to articulate their own personal place on the incredibly complex gender spectrum, conflicting with our society’s tendency to need a label on everything. Are there trolls and things? Yeah probably. But I don’t think many. Trans, cis, bigender, non binary, agender, these are some terms I know and recognize. A lot of the genders after that, I don’t know. I would just treat them how they wish to be treated.

I was simply stating the fact that the group that not only embodies but proliferates white supremacy, and the oppression of minorities more than any other group is straight cis white men.  It is factual to say that they have the most privilege and power in our Western society and  The only way that can be changed is if people in that group recognize that and work to change it.  I can perfectly understand why it would be difficult for straight white man to recognize his own level of privilege and work to correct it.  Just like it’s even difficult for someone like me an American to recognize the privilege they have as an American, or an able bodied person, or etc.

 If you were to Blame  The problem of crime on black men,  it would be ignoring many many years of sociological data in regards to the realities of black poverty and black crime.  I will admit that that post is very petty and aggressive yes. But black people do not have the ability to Solely fix the problems in the community on their own,  especially when people are literally working against solutions.  Did you read the thing that came out recently that said black families haven’t done better in regards to home ownership in 50 years?

 Conversely the only times minorities in Western society start to get rights is when there are enough white people with power who agreed with what the minorities are fighting for.  Do I think every single white person has tons of power to make big changes?  Of course not.  But do I look down on a person if someone tries to tell them the reality of social inequality and they try to act like they aren’t living in it and they are exempt from it?  To be honest yeah a little I do.  Because the social inequality is so fucking obvious and is in literally every single area of life that I don’t understand how you could say it doesn’t exist unless you are blind or a liar or just pathetically misinformed

Why don't black people own homes? Because they don't make enough money to own homes or don't have the credit to do so. These are economic issues. I can be sympathetic to an economic framing of the problem and the opportunity draught of the poor. But white people have nothing to do with this.

But you talk to me about crime and say that's not within black people's control. To hell with this detachment. People are primarily responsible for themselves. And they are responsible for their families. And they are responsible for their brothers and friends. And they are responsible for their community. And there have been many great black men who understood that only they could be their own saviors. Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X, and the great black business leaders, and black Wall Street, and Fred Hampton. And real, true white supremacy tore many of these men down and inflicted harm on black communities. But somehow the message they sent seems to be lost, and we don't live in the times of lynching anymore. Get up and take charge of your life and be a forthright person and do the right thing and people will follow you. And preach responsibility and duty every day. That should be 90% of the conversation. To teach people the value of good, hard work, the fruits of sacrifice, and salvation gifted to the faithful.

First of all, the fact is that the lack of home ownership in the black community is because of redlining. Places only renting or selling property to white families, loans to black people being denied. This carries on for generations. The decimation of education and chance for economic growth in black communities, the shuffling into the criminal system and the devaluing of those communities, not to mention white flight and gentrification. These are all very real things and saying “that has nothing to do with white people” is simply incorrect.

Do you really think I’m just going around saying “I’m a victim and I want my problems that are all not my fault fixed!”? If so, way off base. I am constantly giving myself a hard time, and second guessing my approach in life. I grew up in Baltimore, to a single mom,  and everything we have now is because we both worked very very hard.
