This is actually a pretty easy question, it's Yakuza.

I've played all except the online FFs and only played Like A Dragon so I'm not really equipped to answer but Yak seems like it would be a lot more consistent.

DQ vs FF would be a better (although completely one sided) match for consistency.

Another interesting thread would be... which long-lived series is the most consistent? DQ, Ys, Yakuza are potentials for that one.

I'd say Final Fantasy personally

If you asked any generic Yakuza normie, they'd reply "Just play 0 and dont bother with the rest"

I love Yak but it can get a bit samey, actually plan on giving LaD a spin soon.

FF rocks, giant and sprawling and gets my vote overall.

Is there any game series that differs so much between core entries as FF does? Mario maybe?

The funny thing is you tell people in the late 2000s that in the late 2010s, Yakuza would be turn based and FF would be action and they'd laugh at you.

It's a worthwhile and meaningful comparison because the franchise that gets a shoestring budget in comparison along with a lot less development time between entries, is somehow better as a whole versus a franchise that gulps down money, time, different producers or directors, and is wildly inconsistent between every entry.

But you just said why it’s a terrible comparison.

One is on a yearly schedule almost. Has less ambition. Has no problem re-using content adnausem to achieve that release schedule. And also probably has entire different set of standards and goals it tries to meet for fans and for the development size.

The other positions its main series a as big unique experience and production. Each game is basically a new AAA jrpg, with some offering unique visions from the different development teams.

They are different beasts. This comparison is really pointless beyond trying to say “my preferred series is better than yours”. Beyond the joke that the previous games had rpg like presentation, they weren’t really rpgs and instead urban brawlers. So why even put them up against FF?

You want to compare this to something comparable to FF then compare it to XIV which as a whole is better than any Yakuza game.

I’ve played them all since the 1st on PS2. 3 is pretty long and boring. So are 5 and 6. Not interested in the rpg ones. It’s hardly some untouchable series despite the Jonny come latleys who discovers 0.

Yakuza Like A Dragon is a more appealing game to me than any Final Fantasy.

But the FF games are more varied, this one aside.

So when you say Final Fantasy you really mean modern Final Fantasy as opposed the legacy of the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole.

I've had more fun with it than any FF since 9.
I love the minigames and such, but the game is pretty tongue and cheek and goofy at parts (especially in the side content).
Biggest issues I had with it were some pathfinding issues in battle when the characters were running to attack enemies around the corner or down the street, a few difficulty spikes, and the job system feeling pretty under-utilized.

it's the best yakuza game hands down, you just need to try it and give it a chance.
